La Via del Calvario
( The Way of Calvary)
La cappella del Calvario si trova nell'omonima via che congiunge corso La Masa con uno dei quartieri più antichi di Trabia, scelto dai pescatori per la sua posizione rialzata dal mare ma a cinque minuti dalle loro barche che potevano controllare comodante da casa. L'edificazione risale al 1830 quando Trabia è ancora caratterizzato da case terra e allineate lungo la croce di strade: corso La Masa, via Calvario, via Lima. In cima ad una roccia arenacea quarzosa, alta, solitaria, visibile da ogni punto del paese. Durante la costruzione della cappella si andava a raccogliere i ciottoli, necessari per la pavimentazione delle gradinate, nelle spiagge, e fu proprio in quel periodo che un ragazzo di nome Carlo Bondì rinvenne nelle grotte sotto il castello la quattrocentesca Croce di Trabia. Da alcune schede redatte viene affermato che la primitiva chiesa viene eretta su basamento superstite di una Torre di avvistamento del IX/X periodo arabo.
The Calvary chapel is located in the homonymous street that joins Corso La Masa with one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Trabia, chosen by fishermen for its position raised by the sea but five minutes from their boats that they could control from home. The construction dates back to 1830 when Trabia is still characterised by earthen houses and lined up along the cross of roads: Corso La Masa, via Calvario, via Lima. On top of a quartz sandstone rock, high, lonely, visible from every point of the country. During the construction of the chapel they went to collect the pebbles, necessary for the paving of the steps, on the beaches, and it was precisely in that period that a boy named Carlo Bondì found the fifteenth-century Cross of Trabia in the caves under the castle. From some written sheets it is stated that the primitive church is erected on the surviving base of a watchtower of the IX/X Arab period.
